The best times to visit Japan for most travelers are March to May and October to November. Spring has cherry blossoms and mild weather; autumn has clearer skies, fall color, and comfortable temperatures.
Temperatures vary by region, so this table uses Tokyo as the planning baseline: the average daily low and high for each month, from the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991-2020 climate normals, converted to Fahrenheit. Individual days, especially summer heatwaves, can run well beyond these averages.

April and November are the most beautiful but can be crowded. May and October are often easier: pleasant weather, fewer peak-season bottlenecks, and strong sightseeing conditions.
June can be rainy, July and August can be brutally hot, and late December through early January can bring closures and heavy domestic travel. None are impossible, but each needs a different plan.
For most travelers, April, May, October, or November are the best months.
July and August can be very hot and humid, especially in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima.
Winter outside New Year and ski resort peaks can offer better hotel prices.
