Sapporo Maruyama Zoo

Sapporo Maruyama Zoo is a municipal zoo within Maruyama Park in Chuo-ku, opened on May 5, 1951, making it the oldest zoo in Hokkaido. It sits immediately next to Hokkaido Shrine, and the two are commonly visited together as a single Maruyama-area half-day, though they are two distinct experiences: the zoo is a ticketed, animal-focused family attraction, while the shrine next door is a Shinto worship and cultural site.

Admission is affordable by design: ¥800 for adults, ¥400 for high school students, and free for junior high school age and under, a strong value signal for families. The zoo operates year-round, including winter, with shorter winter hours (9:30 AM to 4:00 PM from November through February) rather than closing for the season, correcting a common assumption that a Hokkaido zoo shuts down in the cold months.

One practical detail is worth knowing before planning a visit: the zoo closes on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month, shifting to the following day if that Wednesday falls on a national holiday, plus a year-end closure from December 29 to January 3. This is exactly the kind of detail that can derail a visit if missed, so it is worth checking the calendar before making the trip.

Among the zoo's most notable features is its Polar Bear Pavilion, opened in 2018, one of Japan's largest polar bear exhibits and home to a zoo recognized for successfully breeding polar bears, a species notoriously difficult to breed in captivity. An underwater viewing tunnel lets visitors watch the bears and, in a separate enclosure, seals appear to glide alongside them from below the waterline. Across its roughly 170 species, the zoo also houses a range of animals suited to Hokkaido's climate.

Because it sits inside Maruyama Park and beside Hokkaido Shrine, the zoo is easy to combine with a broader Maruyama-area day that might also include Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium and the Sapporo Olympic Museum, all within a short taxi ride of each other.
