Do You Need Travel Insurance for Japan?
Not legally required, but your US health insurance almost certainly won't help you here.
Travel insurance is not a legal requirement to enter Japan, but it is strongly recommended since most US health insurance, including Medicare, does not cover care outside the United States. A comprehensive policy covering emergency medical, evacuation, and trip cancellation typically costs 4-8% of your total trip cost.
What a Good Policy Should Cover
Emergency medical
Covers treatment for an injury or sudden illness abroad. The single most important coverage, since most US health plans (including Medicare) don't pay for care outside the US.
Medical evacuation
Covers transport to a hospital that can treat you, or back to the US for serious cases. Can cost $50,000+ out of pocket without coverage.
Trip cancellation/interruption
Reimburses prepaid costs (flights, hotels, tours) if you have to cancel or cut the trip short for a covered reason.
Baggage delay/loss
Covers essentials if luggage is delayed, and replacement value if it's lost. Useful given how much luggage compartments fill up on connecting flights.
What It Costs
4-8%
of your total trip cost, for comprehensive coverage
A $4,000 trip typically costs $160-320 to insure, depending on age and coverage limits
- •Medicare and most US private health insurance do not cover treatment outside the United States
- •Medical evacuation without coverage can cost $50,000 or more from remote areas
- •Travel insurance is not a Japan entry requirement, but is strongly recommended given the coverage gap
- •Some premium US credit cards include limited emergency medical coverage, check your card's benefits guide before relying on it
- •Buy your policy soon after booking, trip cancellation coverage for pre-existing conditions often requires purchase within a short window of your first deposit
- •Confirm the policy explicitly covers Japan and includes medical evacuation, not just trip cancellation
- •Keep a digital and printed copy of your policy and the insurer's emergency phone number while traveling
