The Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway (~河口湖~富士山パノラマロープウェイ) rides from the east shore of Lake Kawaguchiko up Mount Tenjo in about three minutes, to an observation deck at about 1,075 meters facing Mount Fuji across the town. A round trip costs 1,000 yen for adults until 31 October 2026 and 1,200 yen from 1 November 2026. It does not run from 7 to 18 December 2026 for its annual inspection, and wind or thunder can stop it on any day, so check the operator notice before you go.

What the ropeway is for

This is the quickest way above Lake Kawaguchiko. The gondola climbs from the lakeside station on the east shore to Fujimidai Station near the top of Mount Tenjo (天上山), where the deck looks south across Fujiyoshida to Mount Fuji and north over the lake. On clear days the operator says the view reaches the Southern Alps.

The mountain is the setting of the folk tale Kachi-kachi Yama, retold by the writer Osamu Dazai, which is why rabbit and tanuki figures ride on the gondolas and sit around the deck, and why the ropeway was long called the Kachi Kachi Yama Ropeway. At the top are a bell facing Mount Fuji, a small rabbit shrine, clay-disk throwing, a cantilevered lookout, a swing over the drop, and a tea house selling grilled dango.

The view is the reason to go, so the weather decides the visit: when Mount Fuji is in cloud you still see the lake, but not the mountain. The Lake Kawaguchiko guide covers the rest of the shore and the cruise.
