Hiroshima in 3 Days: Peace Park & Miyajima
A compact, moving route through Hiroshima's history and Miyajima's island scenery
Hiroshima rewards a slower visit than most travelers give it. Three days is enough to properly absorb the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, spend a full unhurried day on Miyajima Island, and still see the castle and gardens without rushing.
This is one of the more emotionally weighty stops in Japan, and it's worth treating it that way, most visitors find a single afternoon at the Peace Memorial Museum isn't enough time to process what's there. Balance it with Miyajima's genuinely restorative scenery on Day 2.
Hiroshima connects easily to Kyoto and Osaka by Shinkansen, making this a natural add-on to a longer Kansai-based trip, or a standalone few days for travelers specifically drawn to the history.
What you need to know: 3 Days, $600-$1,800 per person, best in Spring or Autumn, covering Hiroshima with a mix of JR trains and regional transport.
- •Walking level: Moderate
- •Japan Rail Pass recommended: No, point-to-point tickets are cheaper for this route
- •Family-friendly: Not specifically designed for young children
- •Everything in this itinerary is reachable on foot, by subway, or by short local train within Hiroshima.
Your Route
Days 1–3
Peace Memorial Park and Museum, a full day trip to Miyajima Island, and Hiroshima Castle.
What's Included in This Itinerary
Peace Memorial Park
The Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Museum, essential and sobering.
Miyajima's Floating Torii
Itsukushima Shrine's iconic gate, best seen at high tide.
Miyajima Deer & Ropeway
Free-roaming deer and a cable car up Mount Misen for island views.
Okonomiyaki in Okonomimura
Hiroshima-style savory pancakes, stacked with noodles, at a dedicated food hall.
Your Complete 3 Days Plan
Every day. Every stop. Real costs, real transport times, honest opinions.
Arrival & Atomic Bomb Dome
Arrive by Shinkansen and drop bags at your hotel, then walk to the Atomic Bomb Dome, the skeletal remains of the only structure left standing near the 1945 hypocenter, preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Peace Memorial Museum
Allow at least 2-3 hours. The museum's exhibits are unflinching and personal, artifacts, photographs, and survivor testimony. It is heavy, but essential context for the city and the park around it.
Children's Peace Monument & Cenotaph
End the day walking the rest of the park at a slower pace: the Children's Peace Monument (covered in folded paper cranes) and the Memorial Cenotaph, framed to align with the Atomic Bomb Dome.
Where to Stay Tonight
Downtown Hiroshima (near Peace Park or Hondori)
Stay near Hondori shopping arcade or Peace Park for easy streetcar access to everything on this itinerary.

Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki
Layered with noodles and cabbage rather than mixed like the Osaka version. Try it at Okonomimura, a multi-floor food hall dedicated entirely to it.
Ferry to Miyajima
Take the streetcar or JR train to Miyajimaguchi, then the short ferry crossing (JR Pass covers the JR-operated ferry). Arrive early to see the floating torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine before the day-trip crowds build.
Itsukushima Shrine & Mount Misen Ropeway
Walk the shrine's pier-like halls (best at high tide, when the torii appears to float), then ride the two-stage ropeway up Mount Misen for sweeping views over the Seto Inland Sea.
Momiji Manju & the Deer
Miyajima's deer roam freely and are noticeably calmer than Nara's. Grab momiji manju (maple-leaf-shaped cakes, often filled with custard or chocolate) from a stall near the pier before catching the ferry back.
Where to Stay Tonight
Downtown Hiroshima
Return to the same hotel. Miyajima is a day trip, not an overnight stay, for most itineraries.

Momiji manju
Miyajima's signature maple-leaf-shaped cake, sold fresh from stalls near the ferry pier.
Hiroshima Castle
A concrete reconstruction of the original (destroyed in 1945), but the castle grounds and moat are pleasant, and the small museum inside covers Hiroshima's pre-war history and samurai culture.
Shukkeien Garden
A compact, carefully composed Edo-period garden modeled on West Lake in Hangzhou, a calm final stop before departure.
Onward Travel
Hiroshima Station connects directly to Kyoto and Osaka by Shinkansen (about 1h20-1h40) or back to Tokyo (about 4 hours), making this an easy add-on to a longer Kansai trip.

Departure
Check out by late morning; Hiroshima Station has lockers for same-day onward travel.

Tsukemen or Hiroshima-style ramen
A lighter, thinner-broth alternative to okonomiyaki for a final Hiroshima meal near the station.
Transport Guide
Everything in this itinerary is reachable on foot, by subway, or by short local train within Hiroshima.

Book the Peace Memorial Museum's timed-entry slot online in advance during spring and autumn peak season to avoid a queue.
Hiroshima is noticeably cheaper for hotels than Kyoto or Osaka, even in the same 3-4 star range.
